چکیده

The equilibrium structure of homogeneous turbulent shear flow is investigated from a theoretical standpoint. Existing turbulence models, in apparent agreement with physical and numerical experiments, predict an unbounded exponential time growth of the turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate; only the anisotropy tensor and turbulent time scale reach a structural equilibrium. It is shown that if a residual vortex stretching term is maintained in the dissipation rate transport equation, then there can exist equilibrium solutions, with bounded energy states, where the turbulence production is balanced by its dissipation. Illustrative calculations are presented for ak-e model modified to account for net vortex stretching. The calculations indicate an initial exponential time growth of the turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate for elapsed times that are as large as those considered in any of the previously conducted physical or numerical experiments on homogeneous shear flow. However, vortex stretching eventually takes over and forces a production-equalsdissipation equilibrium with bounded energy states. The plausibility of this result is further supported by independent calculations of isotropic turbulence which show that when this vortex stretching effect is accounted for, a much more complete physical description of isotropic decay is obtained. It is thus argued that the inclusion of vortex stretching as an identifiable process may have greater significance in turbulence modeling than has previously been thought and that the generally accepted structural equilibrium for homogeneous shear flow, with unbounded energy growth, could be in need of re-examination.

Shear-improved Smagorinsky model for large-eddy simulation of wall-bounded turbulent flows

A shear-improved Smagorinsky model is introduced based on recent results concerning shear effects in wall-bounded turbulence by Toschi et al. (2000). The Smagorinsky eddyviscosity is modified as νT = (Cs∆) (|S|−|〈S〉|): the magnitude of the mean shear |〈S〉| is subtracted to the magnitude of the instantaneous resolved strain-rate tensor |S|; here CS is the standard Smagorinsky constant and ∆ deno...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

e spacing of streaks in unsteady turbulent w&bounded flow

The spacing of streaks of low-speed fluid has been studied experimentally in a wall-bounded turbulent flow in which sinusoidal unsteadiness was superposed on an otherwise steady mainstream over a range of frequencies. The modulation of phase-conditioned streak spacing about its mean value does not follow the steady wall-flow relation of hu Av equal to a constant. Instead, it is quite accurately...

Anisotropic velocity correlation spectrum at small scales in a homogeneous turbulent shear flow.

A simple theoretical analysis and direct numerical simulations on 512(3) grid points suggest that the velocity correlation spectrum tensor in the inertial subrange of homogeneous turbulent shear flow at high Reynolds number is given by a simple form that is an anisotropic function of the wave vector. The tensor is determined by the rate of the strain tensor of the mean flow, the rate of energy ...

Transient turbulence in Taylor-Couette flow.

Recent studies have brought into question the view that at sufficiently high Reynolds number turbulence is an asymptotic state. We present direct observation of the decay of turbulent states in Taylor-Couette flow with lifetimes spanning five orders of magnitude. We also show that there is a regime where Taylor-Couette flow shares many of the decay characteristics observed in other shear flows,...
